Have you wondered how to plan your content in advance? Planning your content in advance is the key to maintaining a consistent, engaging presence online while saving yourself from the last-minute scramble. Whether you’re managing social media, blogs, or email newsletters, having a system in place helps you focus on creating high-quality content that drives results.

Over the past three years, I’ve created and iterated the exact framework that I’ve shared with you to create content for clients in my social media marketing agency. What differentiates this method from other social media planning system is that it emphasizes aligning content to your business goals, organization, and batching tasks.

Studies show that batching related tasks increases productivity by reducing the time lost from task-switching. So, instead of jumping from brainstorming to writing to posting, this process for planning content in advance takes you through all the phases of creating content, from planning, creating, editing, and publishing.

This process, I believe, is especially beneficial to the creator or small business owner who does not much time to dedicate to content creation, and needs a

Here’s your step-by-step guide to teach you how to plan your content in advance:

Step 1: Understand Your Goals and Map Out the Month

Before you decide how to plan your content in advance, define your goals. Ask yourself:

  • What are you trying to achieve? Is it more sales, engagement, or brand awareness?
  • Who is your audience, and what do they need from you?
  • How can content help meet these goals?

Once your goals are clear, map out your content for the month. Identify themes, campaigns, or important dates (like holidays or product launches).

To streamline this process, I use this Content Planning Template in Airtable. After creating countless content calendars for clients over the years, I’ve done a lot of trial and error and refined my process a lot, and this is the agency and client favorite at Kellie Bourque Marketing.

Streamline your content planning with our customizable Airtable template. Organize monthly themes, visuals, and captions to save time and stay consistent. How to Plan Your Content In Advance

Step 2: Content Sourcing and Research

Content ideas are everywhere—you just need to know where to look.

  • Audience Feedback: What questions or comments do your followers leave?
  • Competitor Analysis: What’s trending in your industry?
  • Look for Inspiration: Here are my favorite places to seek inspiration:
    • Going for a walk (that’s when the ideas always start flowing)
    • Pinterest
    • Non-Fiction books
    • Magazines
    • Social Media

Once you’ve gathered ideas, outline your content. Categorize posts into types like educational, inspirational, promotional, or engagement-focused to maintain a balanced mix.

Step 3: Collect and Organize Visuals

Great content needs eye-catching visuals. Prepare in advance by collecting:

  • B-Roll Footage: Behind-the-scenes moments, product shots, or scenic backdrops.
  • Professional Photos: High-quality images relevant to your content.
  • Stock Photos: Join a membership site like Haute Stock or Elevae for curated, on-trend imagery and b-roll video content.
  • Graphics: Create custom designs for announcements, quotes, or infographics.

Organize your visuals in folders or tools like Canva for quick access when it’s time to create or schedule posts.

Step 4: Write Compelling Content and/or Copy

Your copy is where you connect with your audience. Focus on these elements:

  • Strong Hooks: Start with a question, stat, or bold statement to capture attention.
  • Value-Driven Messaging: Speak to your audience’s needs and show how you can help.
  • Clear Calls to Action: Direct your audience on what to do next—comment, share, buy, or click.

Draft your captions, blog outlines, or newsletter intros in batches for efficiency. My Content Planning Template includes a section for tracking and organizing copy drafts alongside your visuals.

Step 5: Publish, Schedule, and Automate

The final step is to get your content out into the world. Use scheduling tools like Loomly or Meta Business Suite to automate post publishing. This ensures you stay consistent without the daily effort.

  • Experiment with Timings: Test different posting times to find when your audience is most active.
  • Monitor Real-Time Events: Leave room for updates or trends that might impact your calendar.
